Aims & Objectives
In this section I will:
Ideology
- discuss the ideology of Let The Right One In and Michael
- examine why ideology is important to these films
Ideology
Let The right One In
The ideology of Let The Right One In is all about standing up for yourself and protecting your friends. Looking just at the introduction, the viewer hopes that Oskar will win against the bullies in the end. We don’t know whether it will happen but it is hoped so. The ideology of the film is also about judgement. The viewer may assume that Oskar is a bully from the way that he keeps saying ‘squeal, squeal like a pig’ but we discover later that he is in fact the one being bullied. Also when we first see Eli she appears not to be friendly or happy but (later on in the film) we see that she cares a lot about Oskar and would do a lot for him, including kill other people. |
Michael
In Michael, we see a slightly different ideology because the film is more about a friendship which is very inappropriate. Although Michael is protective of Wolfgang he actually has very bad feelings overall for him, and this is apparent throughout his behaviour and his characterisation. The love and care of a father/son relationship is very apparent but it has roots in something that is very much inappropriate. As a result it tears the viewer between sympathy and disgust which makes the ideology of relationships very difficult to understand. |
