Aims & Objectives
In this section I will:
Representation
- convey representation in the films Let The Right One In and Michael
- explain the uses of representation in both films
- try to use examples from the films using characters
Representation
Let The Right One In
In the film Let The Right One In, the gender is represented in a very interesting way. The boy is seen as blonde, pale, frightened and in need of saving. He appears to be the victim as he is being bullied. The character of Eli, the girl, is different to this as she appears to be dark and brooding and strong. It is like the typical gender stereotypes have been switched and the boy is represented as the victim who needs protecting by the girl. The boy seems very feminine and the girl seems very masculine. Even just in the introduction to the film it seems like Eli is there to save Oskar from the bullies. |
Michael
In Michael, MIchael is represented in the first scene as normal: strict but quite mysterious and unusual. The viewer then sees him become disturbing and nasty towards Wolfgang, the young ten year old boy. The difference between the two gives the representation that Michael would be classed as the bully or the evil character and Wolfgang is the innocent self protective young boy (or the 'princess'). However, as the film draws on we can see Michael feel sorry for the boy and have a strange father/son attachment and connection with him. |
